Working intuitively I create original pieces that are meant to evoke a smile while also having an underlying message. My anthropomorphic sculptures and figurative yet abstract paintings challenge the viewer to think about my work's meaning. I invite you to stop by my studio when you are in the area. I also hold classes in clay and paper-mache sculpture for children and adults.

In my images I try to reaffirm our human capacity for intense awareness. I construct what I believe to be compelling circumstances or relationships from fragments of my own experience and ruminations on the world as presented to me by others, not to serve as an explanation, just an acknowledgement.

Sandra Clisham BartzSandra Clisham Bartz

716-886-4837
sandbar622@aol.com
www.sandrabartz.com

The majority of my paintings are created plein aire. After months of observation and evaluating colors in the landscapes my concept turned toward the negative impact we have made on the environment. The pivotal point came in midsummer, while painting the view of the city of Buffalo from the hilltop of Chestnut Ridge Park . The vantage point is about fifteen miles south of the city and though it was a beautiful summer day, the vista was obscured by air pollution. In the theory of atmospheric perspective the distant objects become less intense in color, but these colors had tints of red. Hues of pink and violet hovered over the city, and I felt this to be more ominous than tranquil as it should have been on that pleasant summer day. The title for the painting, "Index 151", reflects my thoughts. After researching air quality levels, I discovered that when the scientific reading of the air index reached 151, the outdoor air is then considered unsafe for even a healthy human to venture outside. The colors in the sky are slightly exaggerated, and there is no form of any human life in the painting.

Paintings and sculptures are portraying my philosophical perception of our environment graphically and metaphorically. The sculptures lean towards the metaphorical. The metal used in the cloud formation pieces makes a statement about fossil fuels emitted into the air. The piece titled, "Rain", made of cast glass and iron is a statement about acid rain. The sculpture "Clear Cut" is a statement about clear cutting trees out west.

I feel we all inhabit this planet and should protect it in every way we can. Voicing my opinion in an aesthetic manner helps to keep the issues open for people to think about, but I have difficulty in the making of this art. The reason is the contradiction I struggle with about the pollution that I contribute during the process of some of this art making. Many materials are toxic. Casting metal emits pollution especially during the iron pours. So the decision to continue is pertinent, but better solutions for processing and safer materials will play a prominent role in my continued development. Painting is the lesser of the pollutants and my stronger medium, and reminding everyone of the frailty of the earth is the goal of my work.

I exhibit and change exhibits almost every month.

Art Statement
I love the process of studio arts, I try to discover that which is hidden inside canvas or wood or cardboxes, I believe everything exists already one just have to discover it and uncover it.

"My approach turns utility into form transcending the initial function of the objects I employ. My pieces are nostalgic, whimsical, and become again, functional. I work with traditional craft techniques - painting, faux finishes, glass painting, wire sculpting with 20 to 12 gauge wire (copper and aluminum), and assemblage of found objects into functional art. I incorporate original wire and bead work done free-hand without the use of patterns or jigs. I work in more than one medium to facilitate the discovery of new techniques and ideas and to then have a means of interpretation and visualization."

My Business:
My service has two parts, to the community: I have donated artwork of historic value to 1868 Schoolhouse, Opera House, Historic Museum, Hull House etc. and to the individual: preserving an image of their homes, homesteads, businesses, barns or boats as they once were or an up-to-date view.

Art allows expression of my feelings toward the outer world and to my inner self. There is a connection to the the mind and the earth elements. There is similarity in the process of traveling on the spiritual path and the journey through the visual symbols expressed in art of nature. Art empowers us to examine concepts such as materialism and our comfort at the expense or the environment , future and true quality of life. Pollution affects all life, even what we cannot see. We are in denial of our selfish destruction.

Sometimes a subtle emotion, or even a sense of movement seems enough. Other times, I feel the need to convey a perception on a deep issue such as, motherhood, women matters, the environment, peace or turmoil in the world, etc.

I work with a vocabulary of personal symbols which lead themselves to a constant mutation and re-invention. This vocabulary includes sexual elements, human body parts, motion and graffiti. I also use mythological symbols such as snakes, spirals, the ideas of good versus evil, fertility, life, death and interaction of male and female. These images are layered, building new forms which change into strange shapes, animals or creatures, many with the action of flying, falling, agitation or disintegration and this becomes my own personal mythology. I give these creatures a deceptive beauty and as you look closer they are not what you first perceive and can be amoral, evil and dangerous or just a slice of life you weren't expecting.

Chary L. Robbins

Illusions 3rd Eye Productions
636 Delaware Rd
Buffalo, NY 14223
716-875-5638

Having painted since she was a child, artist Chary Robbins was given a scholarship to the Albright Knox Art School (Buffalo, NY) at a very young age and what started out as "repetitive doodling" (as her mother referred to it), has grown into a multi-media art form. Chary skillfully stretches the bounds of realism to create highly emotive, organic works of art.

Being put into any "category" is very unfamiliar and difficult to Chary. She likes to think of her work as realistic and poignant, walking the periphery of abstract expressionism, yet providing the freedom to stroll elsewhere. While the viewer may be able to identify what the subject matter is; it is really much more about what the viewer feels when experiencing her work. Chary is more than aware that her meaning has little, if anything, to do with the outside world's interpretation of it. Chary would wish the viewer to be moved by her artwork, to make them feel. Stimulating the senses, be it in a positive or negative way, is a greater achievement than to have her audience experience nothing. Ambivalence could be the downfall of humanity. It is, therefore, not necessary for Chary to give an explanation of her work, she very much prefers on onlookers interpretation. As an artist, Chary has the freedom of expression. As the viewer, she gives you the freedom of interpretation.

Various incarnations of Chary's creative energy can be found in homes, businesses and galleries around the globe, from Buffalo, New York to Baja, California, Finland to Quebec. These incarnations embody many forms including decorative artifacts, paintings, public art projects in Buffalo, NY, Washington, DC, Rochester, NY, Erie, PA, Batavia, NY, Manatawk, NJ and Wilmington, DE, and the creation of private and public interior environments. It has been said that Chary will paint anything that sits still long enough to be painted!

Chary is a native of Western New York and currently resides and works form her home studio in Kenmore, New York.

My paintings consist of images of still lifes or figurative paintings. Using a combination of patterned paper, paint, etc., I express the object and the emotional reaction to the object, as the viewer enters the picture plane.

I like to slightly reinvent the subject of my paintings, blending acute observation with modernist compositional devices. I have applied to these works principles of formal analysis that can address both abstract and representational art, combining the two genres to achieve an emotional and expressive response from the viewer.

Recent Shows:

  • Red River Valley Juried Art Exhibition, Red River Valley Museum, Vernon, TX, May 4 - June 29, 2007.

What I do is experiment, try to see what works. I set certain restrictions for myself: in one painting I used only earth tones and black and white; in another I used one red, one blue, one yellow, one black and white to see what colors I could make. Right now I want to experiment with color and not worry about figures or gestures but to explore the way color reacts on each other, to find some place just short of confusion. at the same time I want to report on the way I see the world, its houses and trees, which leads to distortion and, perhaps, to abstraction, reality being in itself abstract (is anything more abstract than a tree? Or a lake?)

This basic compositional structure of my work is a system of grids. It is then elaborated upon with shapes, repeating patterns, and in some instances letters and numbers. The subject is the process of manipulating color, shape and sometimes texture. My goal is to create a visually interesting statement.

I live in Buffalo NY and am about to graduate from Erie Community College. Next is a Bachelors Degree in Art, then, I plan to teach art after school.

Right now, I am currently working on a number of things, from illustrations for children’s books, to a number of art pieces being done in oil paints, pastels and a few other mediums, including artwork from school. I am not sure what inspires me to create art. It might be something I see or read, a serious thought, or even a funny thought that inspires me. Who knows but the end results are always interesting too me.

I create little miracles in the form of handmade books and cards.  I go for the kind of art that gives you goose bumps because it is so personal.  I strive to help people to see the beauty that the human soul possesses, no matter what dress size its body is.  Always remember that everything is a miracle.  Especially life.

I have been writing poetry since I was five years old and was first published in Earth's Daughters (a nationally distributed women's publication) when I was sixteen years old.  I often perform "raps" at open mic nights and poetry slams.

At the heart of my work I see a process of synthesis.  the very root of this word signifies a 'putting or placing of things together.'  Elements, seen and unseen, illusionary and "real" meet in the midst of the artistic activity.  Color, form, composition, and dimension are called upon to cater a wedding of images and ideas, physics and metaphysics, inner angst and brushstroke, spiritual and material.

Even so, my works embody fragmentation in hope of wholeness, words seeking their place in an ongoing narrative.  It is the human being, the person that is my primary subject.  By focusing upon individual humanity as it embraces the fable and fact of living, as it senses and shapes reality, as it exists in relationship, I seek to explore that greater synthesis of life with life with life.

In each work a dialogue is initiated between artist, medium and ground.  And while I enter the conversation with ideas and presuppositions, the materials and art making process continually challenge my perspective with alternative notions calling for consideration.  In the end, the resulting work embodies this  discourse.  All that has gone into producing the work frames a context and then invites the viewer into conversation.

While primarily a painter, I combine painting, drawing, assemblage and collage to create two and three dimensional artifacts that manifest the interplay between the actual and the illusionary.
