Working intuitively I create original pieces that are meant to evoke a smile while also having an underlying message. My anthropomorphic sculptures and figurative yet abstract paintings challenge the viewer to think about my work's meaning. I invite you to stop by my studio when you are in the area. I also hold classes in clay and paper-mache sculpture for children and adults.

I work in the mediums of concrete and stone with pieces in private and public collections. I believe that art should elicit emotion. Be it a figurative or abstract piece, the goal of an artist should be to capture an emotion and hopefully a response, be it positive or negative.

My interest is in the functional pot with fun. Bowls and mugs have decorative sprigs bathed in earthy browns or bright blues, greens or yellows. People come to my studio with stories of how my pottery has become a part of their family and that gives me great pleasure. A woman in Cuba, NY has served all of her cookies of the last 20 years on a platter I made. Animal banks created in my studio go from the nursery to college dorm rooms with their owners. I've made the forms that have become "my favorite mug" for many people. Stop by my studio should you happen to pass through Wellsville or come to the annual Allegany Artisans Studio Tour in October.

Michael Joseph Hibbard

My inspiration is derived from internal and external factors. In my work I incorporate everything from environmental surroundings to my deepest emotions. The various materials I use help my sculptures to take on a unique industrial form. The two major resources collaborated in my work are clay and metal. Their contrasting appearances compliment each other and often keep the viewer in state of wonder as to what the component’s true identities really are. My main objective is to have the viewer focus on the different textures and to realize how well they can become one. I hope to portray unity in all of my pieces.
The sculptures of Michael Joseph Hibbard are greatly influenced by the environment in which he grew up in. Michael was raised in Upstate New York where industrial architecture is displayed in abundance along with a society who lives for the beauty of art. As a small child, he was surrounded by numerous contemporary structures, from buildings to other inspiring artist’s work. Michael says, “I remember being fascinated by the different shapes I would see while looking out the car window and then rushing home to create Lego structures of my own; I wanted to gather all those ideas in my head and develop one big entity” These acts are what led Michael down the path that he is on today as an artist. The fascination he had with sharp edged forms as a child grew into an even larger attraction that resulted in him integrating these sharp edged forms into his sculptures today. Michael Joseph Hibbard has been creating clay pieces for five years in the past year; he found himself collaborating metal with clay. These two mediums develop a perfect balance in his sculptures and serve as a contemporary satisfaction to the viewer’s eye.

Arthur Hilger

Wood has always fascinated me. Its texture, grain, color, strength, even the smell of it has innate beauty before any artist seeks to alter its shape-- and when he does, it is with acknowledgment of nature’s original design.
A log, though severed from the earth, continues to live. It breathes in air and moisture, swells and shrinks to change its size, changes color according to sunlight exposure, and it has colorful striations caused by molds that are introduced into the wood by parasites.
Some logs tell you what they can be, or not be, and running against the grain will not work. Other logs let the saw run free, slicing arcs, S curves, accepting plunge cuts and lateral slices, as the artist frees the creature or abstraction within. I carve to discover the beauty of wood, the beauty of human design when mixed with the beauty of nature. I carve to give the wood expression and in so doing, I express myself.

Gerald Mead

Buffalo, NY
(716) 838-2394
meadgc@buffalostate.edu

My work consists of small-scale collages and assembles created from photographic images and found objects. The tiny scale is intended to encourage viewers to explore their complexity and search for unexpected references and meanings. The objects I use are often antiquated equipment or unusual objects which take on new meaning when made into a multiple component sculpture.
