The Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County, in conjunction with the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), is pleased to announce funding opportunities for individual artists in Western New York. Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS) provides grants designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of specific, unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career. These are $100-$600 grants for forthcoming opportunities (not necessarily projects) that are distinct from an artist's ongoing work. Artists planning to apply must be able to show proof of residence for the past year in ALLEGANY, CATTARAUGUS, CHAUTAUQUA, ERIE, or NIAGARA counties.
2009 - 2010 Deadlines:
September 24, 2009 for opportunities occurring between November 1, 2009 and February 28, 2010
January 27, 2010 for opportunities occurring between March 1, 2010 and June 30, 2010
May 25, 2010 for opportunities occurring between July 1, 2010 and October 31, 2010
1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a full-time resident for the past year in one of the five counties of Western New York: ALLEGANY, CATTARAUGUS, CHAUTAUQUA, ERIE, and NIAGARA. Applicants cannot be enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate degree program at the time of application.
2. Download and complete the 2010 SOS Application

3. Submit the application to Lauren Albrecht, Regrant Programs Manager at the Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County, 700 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14202 no later than 5pm on the designated due date.
SOS Workshops
The Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County typically presents two SOS Workshops before each SOS grant deadline that rotate throughout various location in the five counties of Western New York. Arts Council staff goes over the grant's guidelines, application, best practices and answer any questions artists may have about the grant before applying. Workshops usually run 45 mins to 1 hour depending on attendance, it is not mandatory to attend a workshop to apply to the grant.
